Final DPS

Second DPS

For my second double page spread, I used the black background as it merges well with the image background. Black was also one of the main colours chosen in my survey along with red and grey which is what I've used in this dps. The image takes up more space on the double page which leaves less space for the article. I think this is effective as it would seem there's less text to the reader. The big font size of the title and stand-first stands out and would let the reader know what the article is about so they can decide whether they want to read it or not.

As the image is part of the background, I placed all text on a side of A4 to make sure no writing is cut off and make it clear where the center is. I added the name of the band at the top and what form the article is in so the readers know what band the article is about and is an interview. I prefer this dps layout as is has a clear theme throughout and looks more suitable for a rock magazine.

DPS Draft

First DPS

For my first DPS draft, I used the image on the left side as that is the most conventional style though I did also experiment with having the image on the right side as that may be the page to catch a reader's attention more as it's the page they see first when they turn over. I also looked at having the image facing the opposite direction.
For the page that will have the text and the article on, I used a grey background as it's light and the writing would be clear against it and also because most people suggested the use of black, red and grey for the colour scheme in my interview and survey.

This is my first draft of the double page spread. I tried to follow the conservative style of a feature article in a magazine by having the headline with a stand first below followed by a quote from the article. However with this layout, I find that one side is busy and packed, which some readers like in magazines, but the other is plain and in my opinion makes it less eye-catching. I also find that this style is less common in rock magazines anyway.

DPS Development

Development of my Double Page Spread

To create my double page spread, I started by using my chosen photograph which I had edited and added it to different backgrounds to make the two sides of A4 that faded and blended with each other. After getting people to review them, I decided on using the second DPS background as it's plain and simple. The others are have more detail therefore would make it quite difficult to read any writing on them.
To look at different types of layouts for my DPS, I placed my image on one side of A4 and the background one the other showing the middle of the two pages obviously. I will also use the last one to develop.

DPS Flatplans

Flat Plans

These are the two flat plans I've created using ideas from my DPS sketches and existing rock magazines. I also looked at other magazines of different genres to compare them. This would help me to identify differences that I can avoid using in my rock double page spread.

My DPS Photos

1.

2.3.

4.

5.

These are some of the photos I took and picked to choose from for my double page spread. I found them quite suitable for my theme as the sky is dark however, this also helps my models to stand out. I like the black fence in the background and the fallen leaves as they give a grungy look. I also like the steps as I could use this to my advantage and place my models in specific places/positions for example, having the 'lead singer' on the steps closest to the camera would show her importance on the DPS.
After getting some feedback and opinions on my images, I found the first three were better for my double page spread. With further development, I settled on using the third image.

My Interview

To help me with the planning for my double page spread, I asked some questions that would be relevant and useful to me to other people so I could get a wider range of opinions and views from potential rock magazine buyers/readers.

My Survey and Analyzed Results

By asking a number of questions by survey, this will help me with layout and content of my music magazine when it comes to choosing between different options of e.g. layout style, colour schemes etc.

Double Page Spread Analysis

DPS Sketches

Double Page Spread Sketches

These are my sketches which show how my double page spread could be layed out. I've done one where the main image is part of the background so the information is spread across both page sides and another where the main image is on one side of A4 and all information is on the opposite side.
